A Guide to Holy Week

As usual, there are multiple opportunities to worship during Holy Week. We’ll gather this Sunday for Palm/Passion Sunday, which takes us very quickly all the way from Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion. Then we rewind a bit, taking the story more slowly through the week.

Thursday - April 6

On Thursday (7:00 PM), we enter into Jesus’s last evening with his disciples. The ritual of footwashing roots us in Jesus’s command to love and serve one another. The Eucharist roots us in the experience of the Last Supper and the command to break bread and pour wine in remembrance of Jesus. The stripping of the Altar and the quiet after the service take us to the garden of Gethsemane, where we are asked to vigil with Jesus as he prepares for what is to come.

Friday - April 7 (Good Friday)

On Friday, the church marks the crucifixion through several different sorts of liturgies. The Central Montgomery County Episcopal Churches will offer a joint service at noon (link to be provided and in person at Transfiguration) that is a modified version of the stations of the cross. At 7:00 pm we’ll gather in person at Good Shepherd for the Good Friday liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer.

Sunday - April 20 (Easter Sunday)

On Easter Sunday (9 AM Zoom, 10:30 AM in-person), you pretty much know the drill. Biggest party of the church year! We’ll sing and shout “Alleluia” and hopefully you’ll bring some treats to add to the coffee hour table. Usual Sunday schedule.
